Gadget tidbits

Big player for small price: The Insignia Pilot is priced cheap but it's packed with features such as Bluetooth, FM radio, photo and video support and Rhapsody DNA Integration. courtesy of Insignia
Zvox 425

Zvox makes nothing but TV speakers, and the advantages of specialization are amply evident in the newest model, the 425. At 37 inches wide, it's the biggest-ever Zvox - and perfectly suited for pairing with a large, flat-screen display or rear-projection TV.

Editors' rating: 7.9, very Good

The good: Zvox's biggest ever single-speaker audio system; five 3-inch drivers; two 4-inch subwoofers deliver enough bass to forgo a standalone subwoofer; super simple setup and operation.

The bad: Only three stereo-only audio inputs; no digital inputs, surround decoding, or video switching; lacks the dynamic oomph of an equivalently priced 5.1-channel speaker system.

The bottom line: The single-speaker Zvox 425 TV speaker system delivers excellent overall sound on movies and music and pumps out ample bass from its built-in twin subwoofers - but at this price, we'd like to see more inputs and some digital connections as well.

Insignia Pilot with Bluetooth

In this image-conscious market, "cheap" electronics under generic brands usually don't turn heads. Yet that's exactly what Best Buy's Insignia Pilot is doing, likely because of its laundry list of features and rock-bottom pricing. The Pilot might not be the best-sounding player on the block, but you'll be hard-pressed to find a better value.

Editors' rating: 7.3, very good

The good: The Insignia Pilot is an incredible value for a media player, and it's packed with features: Bluetooth, FM radio, line-in recording, photo and video support, and Rhapsody DNA Integration. It plays back a wide variety of audio formats and is compatible with both Mac and Windows PCs.

The bad: The Insignia Pilot's sound quality is only so-so, and it's on the large side for a flash player.

The bottom line: The Insignia Pilot won't please audio purists, but it's a great option for feature hounds who appreciate a good value - and the ability to listen to music sans wires.
