Ericka Lee to play Billie Holiday toward end of singer's career

Ericka Lee, who starred in past Perseverance Theatre musicals such as "Tommy" and "Hair," will take on the role of legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday in "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill."

Lee will re-enact Holiday's explosive final performance in a Perseverance play directed by Sue Wilder. Lee will sing such signature tunes as "God Bless the Child," "Strange Fruit" and "What a Little Moonlight Can Do." Rory Stitt plays Holiday accompanist Jimmy Powers.

The production opens with two pay-as-you-can preview performances at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, and Friday, Jan. 11, at the old Elks Hall at 109 S. Franklin St. Patrons under 21 years old must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Other pay-as-you-can performances will be held Sunday, Jan. 13; Wednesday, Jan. 16; and Thursday, Jan. 17. Regular performances start Friday, Jan. 18, and will run through Feb. 10. General admission tickets cost $27, seniors pay $22, and students pay $17.

Church seeks child singers, performers for musical

The Church of the Nazarene is looking for children 4 years old through eighth grade to participate in the musical "Kind of the Jungle."

Play practice will run from 6:45 to 8 p.m. each Wednesday through April at the church at 3220 Mendenhall Loop Road.

Sitka festival organizersseek artists and musicians

Organizers of a new festival planned for this spring in Sitka are looking for artists and musicians interested in participating.

Arti Gras, a music and arts festival that organizers intend to make an annual event, is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, March 14-16, in Sitka.

Organizers are searching for individuals interested in presenting music and art workshops on Saturday and Sunday. They also are looking for musicians to play Saturday or to participate in a songwriters' roundtable on Sunday.

Organizers have scheduled opening receptions from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at various galleries, followed by a dance that evening with Sitka's very own band Belly Meat.
