Arts & Culture in brief

The Creating Place to hold varied workshops this week

The Creating Place will host several workshops in the coming week at its location at 226 Seward St.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, the shop will hold a class covering Adobe Photoshop Elements, in which participants can learn the basics of photo editing and digital design.

From 12:15 to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, participants can create unique pieces of art using ink jet transparencies.

Also on Tuesday, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., there will be a digital scrapbook class focusing on assembling holiday memories for posterity. Using Adobe Photoshop, participants will create a great holiday scrapbook page with kit and printing included in the class.

Women's film festival slated for Jan. 25 at Centennial Hall

LUNAFEST, a nationwide film festival for women, will be held in Juneau this year for the first time since its inception in 2000.

The film festival, sponsored by the manufacturer of LUNA bars, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Centennial Hall. Tickets are available at the door and at Hearthside Books. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $8 for students and children.

The film festival promotes awareness on women's issues and supports women's nonprofit organizations throughout the United States and Canada. The Juneau Pro-Choice Coalition is hosting the film festival to raise money to improve reproductive health care and education in Southeast Alaska. The coalition will donate 15 percent of the funds raised to the Breast Cancer Fund.

"We're really excited about bringing LUNAFEST to Juneau," said Lisa Eagan Lagerquist, chairwoman of the Juneau Pro-Choice Coalition. "I have family who have seen the festival and have raved about it. This is a fun way to support women's health and promote breast cancer research."

The films range from 30 seconds to several minutes and are made by women, about women and for women. For more information on the films and the festival, visit www.lunafest.org, or www.juneauchoice.com.
