The Board of Trustees of the Sealaska Heritage Institute decided to settle a recent dispute that erupted among several staff members. The dispute had grown so contentious that it threatened the peace of the otherwise harmonious office. Various staff members were convinced that their relatives living in outlying villages put up absolutely the best black seaweed.
The Celebration Committee of the Board of Trustees decided to hold a 'Seaweed Contest' during the June 6-8, 2002 Celebration. The names of the three judges will remain a highly guarded secret until Celebration. The Grand Prize for the Seaweed King or Queen will be $500; Second Prize $250, and Third Prize $100. The Seaweed Contest is open to Native and Descendant of Sealaska.
